About Smudge

Smudge Studios is opening as a public studio in March of 2025. It has been the passion project of local artist Skyler Stencil to open a pottery studio for several years in order to create an environment in which all are welcome to try their hands at clay.

Skyler began her pottery journey in Sioux Falls, SD at O'Gorman High School under high school art teacher Gary Siska. Mr. Siska fostered a deep sense of connection to his medium, a connection which inspired and transferred to several of his students, including Skyler. Following high school, she completed her undergraduate degree at Creighton University in Omaha, NE where she spent much of her time in the ceramics studio. Skyler couldn't keep away from clay and continued her time in the studio throughout her Masters program.

After completing her education, Skyler moved back to her hometown, Sioux Falls, where she worked for Dakota Potter's Supply under Tom and Wanda Clarke. At Dakota Potter's Skyler learned about making clay and glaze thanks to the owners' vast knowledge encompassing just about everything concerning pottery.
